VFX breakdown: car paint reflections in 3D

This was done for the project “Guadalupe”. It was the first time I tried something so challenging. The car was shot still against a greenscreen. A 3D model of the car was done in 3D Studio Max (the car paint is quite difficult to emulate). The model was surrounded by moving textures (taken from google images), so the car reflected the environment in order to add the sense of movement. The original reflections on the car were painted out by hand in Shake. The camera position relative to the car was estimated from the shots, and no tracking software was used. Compositing was accomplished with Combustion 4 and Shake on a Mac Intel. Some environment effects were added, such as rain. Some background footage had to be retimed or smoothed, and a lot of tweeking was necesary for the integration.

You can’t guarantee lighting, environment or camera position in outside shoots, especially moving ones. There’s usually some serious money involved in equipment to get usable footage on a real road shoot, not to mention time hitting those “choice” windows of opportunity where nature is cooperating. You guys might want to research film or videography a little before you make comments like that.

Because the actual goal was to set up such a technique from scratch. The music video is the excuse. What would happend if you want to shoot a car falling down a bridge? Would you actually ruin a car for that, just because “it´s easier”?
